Aid for Victims of Earthquake in Haiti
The Presbyterian Disaster Assistance program began meeting the day after the earthquakes in Haiti to check on the wellbeing of mission personnel and plan how Presbyterians will aid the victims. This is a tragedy compounded by significant poverty and beset by multiple hurricanes last year. The people of Haiti are suffering beyond imagination and are crying out for the most basic of needs: water, food, clothing, shelter. They desperately need our help.

The Presbyterian Church (USA) has already released $100,000 for this effort and has a goal of raising $1,000,000.

Presbyterians are encouraged to support the PCUSA’s efforts through donations to the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance program. Contributions can be made through Catonsville Presbyterian Church (make checks payable to the church, with Haiti in the memo line) or directly through the Presbytery of Baltimore.

Go to http://www.pcusa.org/pcnews/2010/10032.htm to read more about the efforts of the PCUSA.

News from the Congo
One of our members, Don Padgett, recently traveled to the Democratic Republic of Congo. While there, Don kindly checked on projects CPC supports such as the Moringa Tree and more recently, the Butoke Seed Project. Don sent along these words: “I was able to visit personally with Dr. Cecile DeSweemer of Butoke. She confirmed to me that she had received the $500 donation from CPC and that it had come at just the right time. When she got word that it was available, the nutrition center had been out of food to feed the children only one day. She was able to immediately replenish their supply. She is very feeble now and has to hold onto someone to walk. However, her voice, mind and spirit are still very strong. I had a very good talk with her.”

Help Feed the Homeless at the Southwest Cold Weather Shelter
Sign up to make casseroles and desserts, help shop for perishables at Sam's Club on Thursday afternoon, or help deliver on Friday afternoons. Catonsville Presbyterian provides dinner and light breakfast each first and third Friday from October to May. Use our recipes or your own. Each casserole should feed 10-12 men and be ready to cook. If you are not able to prepare food, donations of cash help us buy the perishables. Write CWS on the memo line of your check or indicate on your envelope. If you have questions, call or email Ann Green (new: AnnHGreen@aol.com) or Susan Hutton.

Baltimore County Recycling Made Easy!
Recycling Made Easy: Why recycle? Baltimore County’s only landfill, Eastern Sanitary Landfill, is already half full. Starting February 1, recycling in Baltimore County will be easier and more convenient with the start of Single Stream recycling: Paper, bottles, and cans (all combined in the same container) will be collected each week. You may recycle more items than before, including plastic bottles and jugs with a “1” to”7” recycling symbol and wide-mouth plastic containers.

You may use a wide variety of containers, including:

  • blue recycling containers up to 34 gallon capacity,
  • trash containers up to 34 gallon capacity used only for recycling (marked with a large “X” or “RECYCLE”),
  • small cardboard boxes (boxes will be collected with contents).

PLEASE NOTE: Recyclables may no longer be placed in any type of plastic bag. Recyclables in plastic bags will not be collected.  For more information, please visit www.bcrecycles.com or call 410-887-2000. Recycling is a great way residents can “go green” and protect the environment. Peace and Justice Committee – justice for the earth
